Important Information

  • PLEASE remember to label clothes, cardigans, jumpers, coats, bags, lunchboxes with your child's name.
  • Please send spares into school in case of accidents.

We observe children’s progress in order to plan a responsive and appropriate curriculum which will meet the needs and interests of each individual child along their continuing learning journeys. What Happens in Nursery Class?

Autumn Term

  • In Maths we will be counting objects through play up to 5 and visually recognising pictures of up to 3 objects. We will look at 2D shapes, have a go at drawing them and introduce what a pattern is. We will be investigating size by comparing length, weight and capacity in play. We will be learning and singing lots of counting nursery rhymes too!
  • Phonics – Level 1 -  Listening and comparing the sounds of different toys or musical instruments, making sounds a part of storytelling, singing songs and rhymes, clapping along to words or songs, introducing rhyming words, listening out for initial sounds in words.
  • Topics may include: All about me, Families, People who help us.  Autumn,  Halloween, Fireworks and Christmas. We keep these flexible as primarily we will be following the children’s interests. They will also have their own focus week each.

Within topics and child led areas of interest we will also be including a broad range of activities including: craft, baking, science, the world around us, fine motor skills activities, dance and music, as well as other areas of learning provided through resources in continuous provision.

Spring Term

  • In Maths we will continue to count objects up to 5 and visually recognising pictures of up to 3 objects, as well as orally count to 10 and showing finger numbers to 5. We will continue look at 2D shapes, begin to explore 3D shapes through building and play and also making patterns. We will continue to investigate size by comparing and describing length, weight and capacity in play. We will continue to learn and sing lots of counting nursery rhymes.
  • Phonics - Level 1 - letters and their sounds are introduced one at a time as a ‘Sound of the Week’! We will be practising letter recognition for reading and recall, practising writing this letter, listening out for initial/ middle/ end sounds in words, practising oral blending and segmentation for reading and writing. We will also be practising writing our own name.
  • Topics may include: Winter, traditional tales, Valentine’s, Pancake Day, Mothers’ Day, Spring, Farm Animals and Easter. We keep these flexible as primarily we will be following the children’s interests. They will also have their own focus week each.

Within topics and child led areas of interest we will also be including a broad range of activities including: craft, baking, science, the world around us, fine motor skills activities, dance and music, as well as other areas of learning provided through resources in continuous provision.

Summer Term

  • In Maths we will recap counting objects up to 5, visually recognising up to 3 objects and orally counting to 10. We will solve real world maths problems up to 5, use language of 'more/fewer than' and have a go at drawing amounts and numbers. We will investigate and discuss shapes, positions, routes,  and size with a variety of language. We will continue to sing lots of counting nursery rhymes.
  • Phonics - Level 2  - letters and their sounds are introduced one at a time as a ‘Sound of the Week’! We will be practising letter recognition for reading and recall, practising writing this letter, listening out for initial/ middle/ end sounds in words, practising oral blending and segmentation for reading and writing. We will also continue to practise writing our own name.
  • Topics may include: Plants and growing, Minibeasts, Summer, Seasides, Under the Sea and Pirates.  We keep these flexible as primarily we will be following the children’s interests. Instead of focus weeks this term we work on continuing to develop the children’s individual next steps with them through their play. 

Within topics and child led areas of interest we will also be including a broad range of activities including: craft, baking, science, the world around us, fine motor skills activities, dance and music, as well as other areas of learning provided through resources in continuous provision.
