Meeting our Children’s Needs

At Shade School we provide learning which meets the needs of every child. Like most schools we have a number of pupils who have additional educational needs.

Such needs may include:

• Learning difficulties
• Behavioural issues
• Medical conditions
• Communication difficulties

Children with additional or special educational needs may need extra help and support from us and here at Shade we have a dedicated team of support assistants and other adults who, alongside class teachers, will provide support for those children who have additional educational needs.

To ensure that children’s individual needs are met and the necessary support is given, we liaise with a range of agencies such as the speech & language therapy service, occupational therapy and the community paediatric team.

Levels of SEND Support

After discussions with a child's class teacher and Mrs Fogg, it may be decided that a child is placed on the SEND register. All children on the SEND register have their individual progress monitored.

One Page Profile

Our first tier of SEND support is a One Page Profile. This is one document that is reviewed 3 times a year and outlines a child's strengths, areas of difficulty, likes, dislikes and learning aids. Once reviewed, One Page Profiles are emailed home to parents/carers.

SEND Support Plan

Our second tier is a SEND Support Plan. This plan follows a child through school and contains individualised targets. Targets are reviewed and set 3 times a year and are emailed home to parents. Parents are invited to make an appointment with class teachers and Mrs Fogg.

EHCP

If a child's needs are not being met or they are not making progress through a SEND Support Plan, the school and parents may decide to apply for an EHCP. This application is sent to Calderdale to be reviewed. If successful, the school may be granted additional funding to help support a child through staffing, resources or external support.
